Still Weaving

Black and white tapestrySo here is an image of the big one. It is 120cm across and was going to be 100cm high but it might be only 80 as there has been a redesign in the process. This is because I am not weaving with a cartoon behind it but sort of making it up as I go along. There is a big textured area in the black side which you can’t see in the photo and that has evolved not quite as expected.

I have spent most of the last two days designing the posters and flyers for the fundraising show in May. So not much weaving done there then. You know what it is like, designing by committee but there are three different options now and I am not doing anymore to them.

I have had three tutorials this week which has left my head in quite a spin, I think the third was a mistake but he was such a nice chap that I thought he might help. The trouble is he isn’t a weaver so he has started my head spinning in all sorts of directions. I must focus. I have feedback tutorials next week from the assessment marks so we’ll have to see what that brings.

Got my marks.

Well, I got my grades, a 2 (69%) for studio work and a 1 (70%) for extended practice. This means I got a distinction and a merit, but this was just 1% away from two distinctions. I really want to know what I have to do to get two distinctions as I worked my little socks off. I suspect that although I did lots of weaving there just wasn’t enough of anything else in the studio work. Well, next assessments in 6 weeks time so I’ll have to put that right, although I am slightly tempted to wonder why I should bother after working SO hard. The next marks are for studio work and professional practice.

I spent this weekend on a ring linking course, which is like chain mail but jewellery. I made a titanium necklace which I promise to post a photo of when it is finished. I just need to make the clasp. For those of you who read Pratchett, micro mail is next on the agenda, although my link closing isn’t that good so it might chafe a bit!

Assessments today and more pictures

Yes, today was assessments but I won’t get the results until probably Thursday. I just get 2 marks, one for extended practice and one for studio practice. Yes that’s practice with a ‘c’, I keep looking up which is the spelling for the noun and which for the verb but can’t remember it so forgive my lack of memory. Talking of which, since starting this course it has been made plain to me that I can no-longer write a coherent essay, read a map, play the digeridoo or juggle. All these are things I was able to do until a few years ago and now I am completely inept at the them all? Is this a case of old age or what? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

I went to London today and saw the textile exhibition at SOAS which was amazing. Not really my scene but still amazing, lots of ikat and embroidery to send you blind just looking at it let alone trying to do it.

Below is a picture of one of my photo’s. PJ dislikes them but that is because they aren’t what he thinks of as a good photo. Well, it is one of the ones that is on the wall of the studio so hopefully my tutors liked it today. It is of honesty seed pods if you’re not sure and it is the only one I have left in colour and not put into black and white. To be honest it looks better in the flesh.

Honesty colour

I will post again when I get my grades and also I’ll post a photo of my bit of the studio again and an update on the big black and white weaving.

Yes, I know it isn’t weaving but it is part of my extended practice. It is basically three layers of printed acetate one in front of the other. This is currently the most effective, the other one I tried didn’t work well. I don’t think it photo’s very well, or maybe my photographic skills are lacking. It was quite difficult because the acetate reflects the light lots. It has been a great success amongst my peers who all want to buy one.

I am still weaving away and the big black and white piece is about half done. I will post a photo next week
